Psychoanalysis in El Barrio, winner of the PEP 2015 Video Grant, is a film that challenges the not-uncommon notion that Hispanic patients affected by poverty can only benefit from therapies that rely on very concrete interventions. The documentary features: Carlos Padrón (Venezuela); Christopher Christian (Puerto Rico); Daniel Jose Gaztambide (Puerto Rico); David Ramirez (Mexico); Ernesto Mujica (Cuba); Maria de Lourdes Mattei (Puerto Rico), Patricia Gherovici (Argentina); Rafael Art. Javier (Santo Domingo); Ricardo Ainslie (Mexico). The film was made possible by a generous grant from Psychoanalytic Electronic Publishing (PEP) with the support of the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research (IPTAR).
Continuing Education Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
- Discuss the misguided idea that Hispanic patients affected by poverty can only benefit from therapies that only rely on very concrete interventions.
- Discuss possible origins of this idea.
- Discuss the use of psychoanalytic ideas as they apply to treatment of Hispanic patients affected by poverty.
CE Target audience: Psychologists (all levels), Social Workers, Counselors
Presenter:
María de Lourdes Mattei, Ph.D. is Associate Professor of Clinical/Psychoanalytic Psychology at the School of Critical Social Inquiry, Hampshire College. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Puerto Rico and her Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts/ Amherst. She has worked for many years as a clinical psychologist in a variety of settings such as academia, community mental health, private practice, and the theater. She has published and taught in areas of interest such as psychoanalytic theory and practice, race/ethnicity, cross-cultural psychology, theater and Puerto Rican/Latino culture.
