Gender and Sexuality Issues in Treatment:  Transference, Countertransference and Therapeutic Goals

Thursday, November 3, 2016 | 7:00 – 8:30 PM

Details

Over the last decade, we have witnessed a rise in the visibility of gender and sexual diversity in this country. These changes can be seen in popular culture, the law and everyday life. For example, there is increasing awareness regarding the lives and rights of transgender and gender nonconforming people as well as an understanding that sexual identities have eclipsed the previous categories of homo, hetero and bisexual. Recent research highlights the fluidity of sexual identities and practices such as hetero and homo-flexibility and college campuses across the country have groups for students who identify as asexual, pansexuals or for those seeking kinky sex. This workshop will explore this changing landscape of sexual and gender diversity and its impact on the therapeutic relationship—more specifically, we will explore the complex feelings aroused in the therapist working with individuals expressing or struggling with a range of sexual and gender identities.  The focus will be on recognizing and using the countertransference experience therapeutically.

Continuing Education Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Participants will identify their countertransference reactions in encounters with individuals identifying as transgendered or embracing alternative sexualities to the therapist’s own experience
  2. Participants will learn the importance of differentiating subjective versus induced countertransference feelings
  3. Participants will learn how to consider and use induced feelings to understand the other
  4. Participants will learn about the complexity of factors in identity formation as a sexual and gendered person
  5. Participants will consider conscious and unconscious influences on treatment goals in both therapist and patient
