Film Series:  Mind Games

Mulholland Drive

Friday March 18, 2016     7:00-9:00 PM

Part psychological thriller, part biting satire of Hollywood -and above all- a mystifying exploration of dreams, trauma and shifting identities. Come prepared to enter Lynch’s ” murky night world of the unconscious” (New York Times).

This workshop is designed to help the participants to:

  1. Deconstruct the film’s visual images to identify its psychoanalytic vocabulary.
  2. Analyze the relationship between cinematic and psychological  elements of the dream  as it structures the film.
  3. Discuss how the film operates as a projection of states of fantasy, paranoia and trauma requiring the revelation of psychoanalysis to unlock and  interpret its meaning

Presenters:

Emily Fox- Kales, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist who specializes in the treatment of eating disorders, is Clinical Instructor in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. She also teaches cinema studies at Northeastern University and the Graduate Consortium of Women’s Studies and was Film Editor of Gender & Psychoanalysis.
