Resolving Resistance:  The Cornerstone of Psychoanalytic Treatment

Saturday, April 2, 2016   10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon

Resistance is associated with the defenses mobilized by the ego in the interests of managing the environment and psychic survival.  These protective devices, activated in the analytic situation by transference, are recognized as characteristic expressions of the personality.  Once equated with the cutting off of communication, resistance actually performs a communication function.  (Hyman Spotnitz, 1985).

This seminar addresses the layered nuances of identifying and working with resistances in a long term analytic case.  It highlights how working with a patient over time enhances opportunities to reach the depth of core characterological resistances.

Objectives:

This seminar will enable the participant to begin to:

  1. Discuss the meaning of resistance as it is defined in psychodynamic theory.
  2. Identify the various types of resistance as they occur in beginning, middle and advanced stages of a presented clinical case.
  3. Discuss a variety of approaches to helping a patient resolve resistance and apply these ideas to discussions of their own clinical cases.

Presenters:

Susan Benson, MSW, is an advanced doctoral candidate at BGSP.  She has clinical experience in a variety of outpatient settings and is in private practice.

Elizabeth Dorsey, Cert. Psya., BGSP Faculty, is a supervising and training analyst.  She has extensive experience working and supervising clinicians in outpatient settings and in private practice.
