Violet and Her Paps, 2016

Oil on Birchwood Panel
18” x 24”

“Portraits of mothers and children in western art rely upon three assumptions: that the mother and child are biologically related, that they share the same race, and that they are part of a nuclear heterosexual family. I have decided to reimagine or queer the mother/child portrait in order to reflect the more complex ways in which family, love, and childrearing flourish in our contemporary context--Violet and Her Paps is one version of this reimagining.”
